Stress & Shopping

So, I had a very stressful night last night. A good friend of mine got fired and I didn’t take it very well. And since I was still a bit stressed out this morning about it, I did what anyone would do to feel better. Go and buy tools!
Picked up a power screwdriver and a tool box, and thought about drill bits and wrenches and sockets, but decided to wait till I had a precise need for those before buying them.
Then I did the second thing I do to relieve stress, buy computer stuff! I went to CompUSA and picked up the Soundblaster Audigy2 Gamer edition they had on sale through today for like 70$ after rebates. Comes with 5 games, including the first Halo. As I don’t own an Xbox, that’s pretty cool for me as I can now play it.
Then, I saw it. I needed a new printer, and they had a monochrome Laser printer on sale for 50$ after rebates. After several double takes, I realized that yes, it was indeed that cheap. Made by Samsung and I know very little about this particular model…but 50$ for a laser that gets 15,000 pages per cartridge versus 70$ for a cheap laserjet which costs more for ink (though the inkjet would be able to do color….which I never need). I decided to take the plunge! …except CompUSA was out of them, and their website wouldn’tn deliver them, nope, pickup only. “Drat!” I thought. But then….techbargains came to my aid. The pointed me to buy.com which had it, and still has it available here.
Yep, buy.com had it, with free shipping, for the same price as CompUSA. Needless to say, I wasted no time in picking it up. And now I wait excitedly for my new printer to come and replace my old HP Deskjet 612C. Which, if anyone needs an old inkjet, let me know. XD

If you can find a better commercial, watch it

Okay, so I’ve been putting off this entry for too long now.
What the heck is up with these “If you can find a better car, buy it commercials.”
Am I supposed to recognize who the old guy in them is? Is this tag line supposed to be something I’ve seen before? And what the heck is the point of it? I CAN find better cars than Chrysler’s, and I even bought one. So what is the point of telling me not to buy your crappy cars? I thought you were trying to advertise your new employee discount for everyone thing.
So yeah, anyone know who this old guy is or what previous ad campaign they’re referencing? Leave a comment if you do. 🙂

Feline Oral Care

Someone explain to me why my cat’s have to be the ones with teeth problems. They have some sort of chronic gingavitis. It’s not responding to the allergen-free food, it’s not responding to the Max/Oral Care gel, it’s not responding to the latest anti-biotic we’ve got them on, and, to top it all off, the one anti-biotic they DID respond to caused their digestive systems to go haywire. So now they have chronic diarrhea and chronic gingivitis. Yeah, going in and coming out.
*sigh*
We’ve got them on amoxicillin and some long m-drug to try and kill the bad bacteria that’s likely in their intestines now. And we’re putting them off the allergen-free food in an attempt to fix the digestive issues. Then we can focus on the teeth again.
The long and short of it seems to be that we’ll likely have to remove every tooth from my cats. Yeah, I’m going to have some weird looking cats. This is frustrating. I’m hoping the vet has some more tricks up her sleeves. She says I can visit a tooth specialist too, but every time someone in my situation has visited them, the specialist just agrees with her and sends them back to have the teeth removed.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

So I went to see the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that opened tonight.
Now, people were expecting bad things for one main reason:
1) It doesn’t have Gene Wilder.
I want to tell you that people are correct about this point, but that in no means makes this movie bad in any way.
The film is hilarious. The effects are eccentric without being too weird (something I was concerned about with Burton involved). The music is great. The plot is different from the first movie (no, not exceedingly so, but definitely different in many areas). I enjoyed it very very much. Depp once again comes through and does a wonderful performance. Yes, he looks like an idiot in the previews, but on screen and in context, Wonka is a wonderful funny character. So, overall, the movie was great, and you should go see it. Even if you just want to look at it as a parody of the first film, you will enjoy it. Go check it out.
Now, for the million dollar question. Depp vs. Wilder.
The answer is, quite expectedly, Gene Wilder. He plays a more sagely, lovable Wonka, and he will always be the way I think of Wonka. This is not to say Depp’s is inferior, but it is a different character, and if I have to pick characters, I’d go with Wilder’s Wonka.
I have heard Wilder won’t go to see the new movie. I do think that’s a mistake, for it is a great experience, and definitely worth seeing. Yes, it’s different, but that’s a good thing. We don’t have to pick one movie or the other, we can enjoy them both. Kind of like a musical revival. The new version is updated, but the original is still classic and always will be looked up to by children and adults everywhere.
